about

Nat Turner experienced a series of visions In May 1829, he became convinced that, “by signs in the heavens, it would (be made) known to me when I should…arise and prepare myself and slay my enemies.” His enemies were white slave-owners. Turner’s vision led blacks in Southhampton, Virginia, to call him “The Prophet.” The son of an African woman fiercely opposed to slavery, Turner saw himself as an instrument of God. He had a mission: to lead his people out of bondage.
In February 1831, a solar eclipse convinced Turner the moment of truth was fas approaching.
